Creating innovative housing solutions for military families

Intermarket was retained by Downsview Park, Canadian Forces Housing Association (CFHA) and the Department of Defence (DND) to create a customized residential plan that would meet the unique needs of Canada ‘s military families at Downsview Park.

Intermarket worked with a number of different Department of National Defence (DND) departments to define the key issues that would need to be included in a new housing project for the military.

One of the key challenges was to design a customized housing program that allows the military families to have their own community; yet enable this group to be integrated into the local neighborhood.

The other major issue was to create a child-friendly neighborhood that could draw on the support of the other military families when one of the parents was dispatched overseas for an extended period of time.

Working with a team of consultants, Intermarket created a housing plan that was customized for military families, yet was flexible enough to be integrated into the local neighbourhood.

In addition, the housing plan allowed families with a parent that was stationed overseas to draw upon the support of the other military families in this unique community.

The development program met all the requirements outlined by DND and was accepted by the Canadian Forces Housing Association.
